Model Viewer – Material Scales

If you have downloaded Civil Site Design v18.1, you will notice by default that hardware acceleration is turned on. Model Viewer will now display at a much high render quality.

So, it is suggested that you increase the scaling of your existing materials in the Material Groups command. The screenshots below demonstrate a change from the default .001 scale to .01 of the default materials.

Civil Site Design v18.1 Released!

Civil Site Design v18.1 is now available to download. Over the next month, we are going to be releasing new updates with some big improvements and new features.

New & Improved Features

  • Improved graphics display. By default, this version will take advantage of your graphics card. So, you will find commands like the Vertical Grading Editor, Cross Section Viewer, and Model Viewer running much smoother and looking much better. If you’re experiencing issues with this new version, then please read this post.
  • Selecting ‘Build Surface’ in the Surface Manager will now update Satellite Surfaces and Combined Surfaces.
  • New command arduv7AJEBCombinedSurfaceSettings allows users to control the order of processing combined surfaces. This command is useful if you have combined surfaces added to another combined surface – stacked surfaces. We will be adding this command to the ribbon in the next update, but we though we would let you know about it now.
  • Grading models now render better in Model Viewer. Codes that were named (XXL) are now given their proper code name, which means easier material assignment.
  • A critical issue calculating pipe flows has now been addressed.
  • Improvements have been made to the new DRAINS interface.

V18.1 – Hardware Acceleration

Civil Site Design v18.1 will by default make use of your graphics card for all graphical processing.  This means that commands like the Vertical Grading Editor, Cross Section Viewer, and Model Viewer will look much better and perform a lot smoother.


Before installing v18.1, it is recommended that you ensure that your graphics card drivers are up to date. If you experience performance issues when installing v18.1, then updating your graphics card drivers should resolve the issue.

If you have an old computer or are still experiencing performance issues with this new update, then you can turn off the hardware acceleration.

For AutoCAD/Civil3D users, open the file ARDNETInitialise.ini, found at the location C:\ProgramData\CSS\ARD\Program Settings.

Change the values for ‘Accel’ and ‘Antialiasing’ from 1 to 0, to turn off hardware acceleration and restart the software.


BricsCAD users will find the ARDNETInitialise.ini file in the following location –

BricsCAD v17 – C:\ProgramData\CSS\ARD\Settings\BC17

BricsCAD v16 – C:\ProgramData\CSS\ARD\Settings\BC16

Model Viewer Standalone (free download)

Model Viewer Standalone provides offline viewing of models you create using the Model Viewer tools in Civil Site Design, CSD Siteworks or Stringer Topo.

In your authoring CAD platform, open Model Viewer to view the model you want and run Output > OBJ Output to create files able to be read into Model Viewer Standalone.

With Model Viewer Standalone, you can import any .obj files to build up your own visualisation experience.

The software installs as a .exe on your computer and can be opened as per any installed program in Windows.

We plan to add a lot more functionality to this product in the future including sight distance analysis, drive tools, animation and more. If you have any suggestions for this product, then please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Version 18 Released!

Civil Site Design v18 is now available to download for all subscription customers.  To license this product, customers will be required to activate their license using a v18 serial key. Serial keys for Civil Site Design v18 can be attained by logging into the Civil Survey Solutions Subscription Centre. If you are unable to login to the Subscription Centre, then please e-mail for help.

Version 17.014 to be released soon!

Civil Site Design v17.014 will be released very soon. This version contains a number of fixes and some new functionality. Also, this version will be available for BricsCAD v17 users.

New functionality added includes:

Improvements to Image From Satellite command.

We now allow users to select from a number of different map providers. Users can select from the following providers:

  • Bing Satellite
  • Bing Hybrid (includes road names)
  • Google Satellite
  • Google Hybrid (includes road names)
  • NearMap Satellite
  • NearMap Hybrid

To use some of these map providers, users might be required to enter further login details in the Model Viewer ‘Viewer Settings’.


Fast Refresh option added to Model Viewer

Trimming boundaries to the base surface is the slowest part of refreshing Model Viewer. Users who are working on large design projects who want a faster refresh can now benefit from the ‘Fast Refresh’ option.


When ‘Fast Refresh’ is turned on (via the Viewer Settings), the base surface will not be trimmed and a transparency is added to the base surface, so that design data can still be seen.
